Orders: LepiLED be easily be ordered by email. Please let us know which model (and further equipment) you wish to order, and send your address. You will then receive a reply and an invoice quickly. The material will be shipped immediately after payment. Payment is possible with bank transfer and Paypal (fees). Product details and prices, see below.

Shipping: For parcels within the EU, regular shipping is recommended (parcel EU € 16.65, non EU € 25.90). For countries outside Europe, regular shipping is chaper than Express, but slower. Example: Parcel to US/Canada regular € 37, Express € 82. Shipping costs are individually calculated. If you wish Express shipping, a phone number is required.

What is LepiLED?

We have developed LepiLED to greatly facilitate the sampling of nocturnal insects. We are now world market leader in this segment, and lamps are used successfully all over the world. Corresponding research has been published in Nota Lepidopterologica 40: 87–108 and further papers (see below).

The light emitted by the eight Nichia Power LEDs contained in LepiLED directly corresponds 
to the three sensitivity peaks of most nocturnal insects (UV, blue and green in
the electromagnetic spectrum). Since nocturnal insects respond most strongly to UV radiation, four of the LEDs emit at the UV sensitivity peak at 365 nm (invisible to humans).

LepiLED is lightweight (only c. 410 g), small, robust and efficient. This makes LepiLED particularly suitable for work in remote areas. The equipment can easily be transported in backpacks and taken on planes.

Design

LepiLED has a passive cooling system and is made of anodized aluminium and a tough, long-life 3 mm borosilicate glass cylinder. The lamp is leakproof (IP 65/67). The emitted radiation is intense, dazzling some people. This effect can be lessened with a piece of bubble wrap placed around the lamp that scatters the radiation, but does not absorb it. When used behind gauze, the dazzling effect is dampened, but optical fabric brighteners might partially transform UV into blue radiation. Clear acrylic glass cylinders are available to replace the orignal cylinders where required. Both cylinder types have the same transmission properties.

LepiLED can be operated with a voltage between 5 and 13 V DC (Maxi Switch “UV mode“: 5–9 V). The lamp has a 2 meter cable with a USB plug, optimized for the use with 5 V powerbank batteries. Depending on their size, powerbank batteries (e.g. easy acc 26 Ah) can provide power for ca. 10 h (Standard), 6 h (Maxi), 6 or 12 hours (Maxi Switch), and 20 h (Mini). We recommend powerbank batteries with 26 Ah (=26000 mAh) and QC 3.0 output (= 3 A) (use search terms powerbank, 26000 mAh, QC 3.0).

Powerbank batteries can be recharged with a USB charger (as used for mobile phones) or, especially in remote areas, with mobile solar panels. Note that the Maxi models require 2.5 Ampere (ideal 2.7 A). We recommend QC 3.0 (Quick Charge) chargers providing 3 Ampere. LepiLED can also be operated directly from the mains using this charger. Other batteries (e.g. 12 V lead car or motorcycle batteries) can be used with the available adapter (not in Maxi Switch “UV mode“).

Five models

Standard optimizes the balance between energy demand and emission, while Mini optimizes energy consumption, and Maxi has the highest emission rate. Maxi Switch can be operated in “mixed radiation” mode (as the other models) or in engergy saving "UV mode". Mini Switch is the ideal solution for traps and maximum duration.
